Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, or Cancun? Why I Recommend the Riviera Maya

Planning a vacation to Mexico? Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and the Riviera Maya (which includes Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum) are three of the most popular spots - and with good reason. Each offers sunshine, great food, and plenty of beachfront resorts.

But when it comes to choosing the best place to vacation in Mexico, the decision isn’t always easy. If you’ve been comparing Cancun vs Cabo or scrolling through Puerto Vallarta resort reviews, I’m here to help you cut through the noise.

Let’s be honest, figuring out where to go in Mexico can be overwhelming. It’s one of the questions I hear most. And while Cabo and Puerto Vallarta both have their charms, I often steer my clients toward the Cancun area, especially the stretch of Caribbean coastline known as the Riviera Maya. If you're looking for calm, swimmable beaches, comfortable resorts, and the option to explore Mayan culture or simply relax with a cocktail in hand, this is the region that delivers.

Here’s how the Riviera Maya (Cancun area) compares to Mexico’s other popular coastal destinations.

Getting There

Riviera Maya (Cancun area): Most travellers fly into Cancun International Airport, with plenty of direct flights from across Canada. From there, resorts stretch south along the Caribbean coastline in areas like Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Transfer times vary depending on where you're staying, with private transfers being the fastest and most comfortable option.

Cabo San Lucas: Flights arrive at Los Cabos International Airport, with a mix of direct and connecting options from Canada. Most resorts are a 30–45 minute drive from the airport, and private transfers can be arranged for a smoother arrival.

Puerto Vallarta: You’ll fly into Licenciado Gustavo DΓaz Ordaz Airport, with direct flights available from several Canadian cities. Resorts are typically within a short drive, especially if you're staying in the Hotel Zone or Marina area.

✈️ Why it matters: If you’d rather spend your time on the beach than in transit, Cancun-area resorts offer the shortest and simplest journey for most Canadians.

Beaches & Resorts

Riviera Maya: This is the Caribbean side of Mexico, and the beaches reflect that with soft white sand, clear turquoise water, and warm, gentle waves. The coastline is home to some of the country’s best all-inclusive resorts, from adults-only getaways to multi-generational favorites.

Cabo San Lucas: Dramatic views and luxury resorts, but the beaches are often unsafe for swimming due to strong currents.

Puerto Vallarta: Set on the Pacific Ocean, the beaches are smaller with golden sand and bigger surf. Charming in their own way, but less ideal if you’re craving those classic Caribbean waters.

🌴 Why it matters: For beach quality alone, the Riviera Maya is tough to beat.

Things to Do

Riviera Maya: There’s no shortage of options here. Explore Mayan ruins like Tulum or Coba, swim in cenotes (freshwater sinkholes), snorkel along the reef, or spend the day at one of the area’s eco-adventure parks. The nearby towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum offer restaurants, markets, and laid-back nightlife.

Cabo San Lucas: Best for whale watching (in season), golfing, sunset sails, and spa time. It’s more of a relax-and-unwind destination.

Puerto Vallarta: Known for walkable charm, cobblestone streets, food tours, and a thriving arts and LGBTQ+ scene.

πŸͺ· Why it matters: The Cancun region gives you the freedom to explore or stay put - whichever feels right for this trip.

Overall Vibe

Riviera Maya / Cancun Resorts: Easygoing and flexible. Great for couples, groups, or families who want a blend of comfort, culture, and beach time, without a complicated itinerary.

Cabo San Lucas: Stylish, quiet, and upscale. A good fit if your dream vacation involves little more than a good book and a poolside margarita.

Puerto Vallarta: Energetic and walkable, with a more local feel. Less focused on resorts, more about town life and community.

β˜€οΈ Why it matters: Riviera Maya offers a resort-forward experience with lots of options for exploring nearby towns without leaving the Caribbean coast.

Why the Riviera Maya Often Comes Out on Top

All three destinations have their own appeal. But if your ideal Mexico vacation includes:

  • Direct flights from many Canadian cities

  • Where the beach is soft, the water is swimmable, and the resort takes care of the rest

  • The chance to explore ruins, cenotes, and local culture β€” without straying too far from the resort

…then the Riviera Maya (including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum) is a standout choice.

Want a relaxing vacation without the research rabbit hole? If you’re tired of comparing resorts, reading endless reviews, or second-guessing your destination, I can help. I’ll narrow down the best options based on what matters to you β€” and take care of all the details.
